How Couples Counseling Works

Couples counseling consists of a mix of 60-minute, one-on-one sessions and relationship sessions that help you and yours work through your concerns. In addition to listening, your therapist will ask questions and guide you towards solutions, they play an active role. Here’s how it will work step-by-step:

1. First, your therapist will meet with each party individually to provide a safe, accepting space so that each person will feel comfortable sharing their goals and struggles.
2. After meeting with each partner your therapist will work together with you to develop a plan to meet your shared goals.
3. Next your therapist will help you with immediate concerns like managing conflict and challenging situations.
4. Periodically you may meet with the therapist individually to ensure therapy is working for everyone.
5. Over the course of your sessions, you will start to making progress towards the relationship you desire.

Research shows that couples counseling can positively change your thinking, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. It can help you let go of what’s holding you back.
